A bunch of classic 90’s comedy’s have come across my desk in Blu-Ray. this week. A duo of disks instantly got my attention Wayne’s World and Wayne’s World 2. This SNL spinoff was the most successful of all of Loren Michaels’ attempts to adapt a SNL skit to the big screen.
Almost 20 years later my goal was to see how these films adapt to Blu-Ray. The more important issue is do these films stand up to time?
For any one unfamiliar with these films and the SNL series they are centered around two friends Wayne Campbell and Garth Algar. This pair of hardcore geeks have a local cable access television program in Aurora, Illinois that they host from Wayne’s parents basement.
As you make your way through both movies you are quickly reminded of the plethora of catch phrases this move created. Not only did this movie add to the lexicon of suburban America but also rekindled some classic rock hits.
Aerosmith are considered gods in these movies and who could forget the Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody being jammed out in Wayne’s AMC Pacer.
This brings me to the Blu-Ray disk itself. The films look phenomenal especially some of the bigger production scenes in WW2 like Waynestock. More impressive than the visual improvements is the audio. The concert scenes really pop especially Tia Carrere’s Ballroom Blitz.
The bottom line is Wayne’s World and Wayne’s World 2 stand up. Both films are just as funny as the day they were released. There are not a lot of extras on the Blu-Ray. disks but the upgrades to the audio are an impressive addition.
