The Minnesota Vikings brought the total number of NFL players receiving franchise tags to Eight on Monday as they placed a non-exclusive tag on linebacker Chad Greenway. The designation will guarantee Greenway at least $10M in 2011… should there be an NFL season in 2011.
Greenway’s fellow franchise tag recipients are LaMarr Woodley, whom the Steelers tagged on Friday, Peyton Manning, Michael Vick, Tamba Hali, David Harris, Vincent Jackson and Haloti Ngata. Only Vick and Manning received “exclusive” franchise tags, meaning that no other teams can make them any offers this offseason.
The Vikings tagging Greenway ended the offseason debate over which Minnesota player would be designated… Chad or wide receiver Sidney Rice. Unless the Vikings can work something out with Rice, he’ll hit free agency with several teams showing interest in him. Again, if there is a free agency.
Other recent NFL transactions included the Indianapolis Colts cutting Pro Bowl safety Bob Sanders, the Oakland Raiders extending defensive tackle Richard Seymour two more years and the Philadelphia Eagles signing free agent linebacker Rashad Jeanty.
