It was said that the signing of the first round of NFL draft picks was going to be easier after the new CBA, and that appears to be the case. It’s only been a few weeks since the 2012 NFL Draft concluded and we already have six first round draft picks either signed or agreed to terms.

The latest first rounder to sign is Nick Perry, the defensive end from USC who the Green Bay Packers selected with the 28th overall pick. The terms of the contract are yet to be disclosed. Perry joins the likes of Luke Kuechly, Bruce Irvin, Melvin Ingram, Shea McClellin and David Wilson, who have all agreed to terms or officially signed with their teams. Read the rest of this entry »

Three down, 28 more to go. Today, the Carolina Panthers came to a mutual agreement with their first pick in the 2012 NFL Draft, linebacker Luke Kuechly. The deal is reportedly worth $12.58 million over four years with every cent guaranteed.

Kuechly was picked 9th overall and was touted by many as the best linebacker in the 2012 draft class and is now the third 2012 first round draft pick to agree to terms with their new team. The previous two were Melvin Ingram of the San Diego Chargers and Bruce Irvin of the Seattle Seahawks.

The three announcements mean that those three players are the incorrect answer to our 2012 First Picked/Last Signed contest. Read the rest of this entry »

And so it begins. The first 2012 first round draft pick to be signed is linebacker, and now officially Seattle Seahawk, Bruce Irvin. The two parties came to terms earlier today. The contract also makes Irvin the first incorrect answer in our “First Picked/Last Signed” Contest.

The First Picked/Last Signed Contest is unlike any other contest you’ve entered before, well, unless you entered this contest last year or the year before. Entrants are given the opportunity to predict who will be the very last first-round draft pick from the 2012 class to sign with the team that drafted him. Once you have made your choice, you could call it a day and wait until there is only one first rounder unsigned… OR, you can come back tomorrow, and every day up until all but one of the first round draft picks are under contract, and submit your entry again. We are still in the middle of the 2012 NFL Amateur Draft, but the first round is a few days old and that means the players’ next step is landing their first NFL contract. With the new rookie wage scale, it puts all of the leverage back in the hands of the owners, but that doesn’t mean the process is going to be easy.

There seems to be one every season… A first round NFL Draft pick that becomes a thorn in the side of the team that picked him and becomes difficult to sign. Sometimes these “hold outs” last well into camp, and, in recent years, we’ve seen draft picks not sign until a few weeks after the season started. The owners of those NFL teams may not be having fun with it, but to hell with them… it doesn’t mean we can’t be entertained by it. Therefore, TMR Zoo presents: the 2012 NFL First Round Draft Pick “First Picked/Last Signed” Contest. Read the rest of this entry »

Calvin Johnson Tops Cam Newton in Madden NFL ’13 Cover Vote

Posted by Steve Tomassetti On April - 26 - 2012 ADD COMMENTS

After five weeks and as many rounds of voting, Detroit Lions’ superstar wide receiver Calvin Johnson, Megatron, was voted in by fans as the cover athlete the upcoming Madden NFL ’13 video game. In the final round, he narrowly beat out Carolina Panthers’ rookie sensation and starting QB, Cam Newton, 52% to 48%. In the previous rounds leading up to the final, Johnson beat the hell out of the likes of Aaron Rodgers, Rob Gronkowski, Arian Foster and Dwayne Bowe. Only the vote against Newton was close, the rest were blowouts.

So now all we have to do is wait for Madden NFL ’13 to hit store shelves… oh, and also see what ill fate is upcoming for Megatron via the dreaded “Madden Curse”. Last year’s cover athlete, Peyton Hills, who was on the Browns at the time (isn’t that curse enough?), saw limited action in 2011 due to a hamstring injury and contract dispute. 2012 NFL Schedule Announced (Full Listings, All Teams)

Posted by TMR Newswire On April - 17 - 2012 ADD COMMENTS

The NFL announced today its 17-week, 256-game regular-season schedule for 2012, which kicks off on Wednesday night, September 5 and concludes on Sunday, December 30 with 16 division games.

The season begins with the NFL’s annual primetime kickoff game. The opener on September 5 on NBC (8:30 PM ET) will feature the defending-champion New York Giants hosting the division-rival Dallas Cowboys at MetLife Stadium. In a format introduced in 2004, the Super Bowl champion annually hosts the NFL season opener.

NBC’s Sunday Night Football will get underway on September 9 when the Denver Broncos host the Pittsburgh Steelers (8:20 PM ET) in a rematch of last season’s Wild Card playoff thriller.

Among the highlights of Kickoff Weekend are six division games, including a pair on Monday night, September 10.  ESPN’s Monday Night Football doubleheader will feature the AFC North’s Cincinnati Bengals at the Baltimore Ravens (7:00 PM ET) followed by the AFC West’s Oakland Raiders hosting the San Diego Chargers (10:15 PM ET).

For the remainder of the season, ESPN will televise one game each Monday night in Weeks 2-15 and a Saturday-night contest in Week 16. There will be no Monday night game on the final regular-season weekend (Week 17) to provide more flexibility to the scheduling of the opening weekend of the NFL playoffs.

The 2012 NFL Kickoff Weekend schedule:

Sunday, September 9

The regular season will conclude with Week 17 on Sunday, December 30. For the third consecutive year, all 16 games scheduled for Week 17 are division contests, enhancing the potential for more games at the end of the season with playoff ramifications.

The 2012 season concludes on Sunday, February 3 when the NFL will crown a champion at Super Bowl XLVII at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans (CBS).

Thanksgiving will feature an NFL tripleheader. The early game will send the Houston Texans to Detroit to face the Lions (12:30 PM ET, CBS). The late afternoon game will feature the Washington Redskins visiting Dallas (4:15 PM ET, FOX) in an NFC East showdown. The holiday concludes with an AFC East matchup as the New York Jets will host the New England Patriots on NBC (8:20 PM ET).

The NFL will again extend beyond the borders of the United States. On October 28 at London’s historic Wembley Stadium, the league will resume its international series of regular-season games when the St. Louis Rams host the New England Patriots (1:00 PM ET, CBS). Then on Sunday, December 16, the Buffalo Bills will venture north to Canada for the fifth consecutive season when they host the Seattle Seahawks in Toronto at the Rogers Centre (4:05 PM ET, FOX).

NFL Network will now feature 13 games – all on Thursdays – from Weeks 2-15 (excluding Week 12 on Thanksgiving night). The NFL Network slate will start on Thursday, September 13 (8:20 PM ET) with an NFC North showdown featuring the Green Bay Packers hosting the Chicago Bears.

The season again will utilize “flexible scheduling” in Weeks 11-17. In Weeks 11-16, the schedule lists the games tentatively set for Sunday Night Football on NBC. Only Sunday afternoon games are eligible to be moved to Sunday night, in which case the tentatively scheduled Sunday night game would be moved to an afternoon start time. Flexible scheduling will not be applied to games airing on Thursday, Saturday or Monday nights. A flexible scheduling move would be announced at least 12 days before the game. For Week 17, the change will be announced no later than six days before the game. The schedule does not list a Sunday night game in Week 17, but an afternoon game with playoff implications will be moved to that time slot to conclude the season. Flexible scheduling will ensure quality matchups in all Sunday time slots in those weeks and give “surprise” teams a chance to play their way into primetime.

The NFL’s 32 teams will each play 16 games over 17 weeks. Byes will begin in Week 4 and end in Week 11.

The playoffs will include four division winners and two wild cards from each conference. The playoffs begin with Wild Card Weekend on Saturday and Sunday, January 5-6. The two division winners with the best records in each conference will earn first-round byes.

Wild Card Weekend winners join the top two division champions in each conference in the Divisional Playoffs on Saturday and Sunday, January 12-13. The AFC and NFC Championship Games will be played on Sunday, January 20. The winners meet two weeks later on Sunday, February 3 in New Orleans in Super Bowl XLVII.

CBS will present the AFC, the AFC playoffs, the AFC Championship Game and Super Bowl XLVII. FOX will carry NFC games, the NFC playoffs and the NFC Championship Game. The 64 AFC-NFC interconference games (excluding primetime) are carried by CBS when the AFC team is the visitor and by FOX when the NFC team is on the road. All postseason games are televised nationally. In addition to its Sunday night package, NBC will televise a Wild Card playoff doubleheader on Saturday, January 5, and the Pro Bowl on Sunday, January 27.

By NFL policy, ESPN and NFL Network games also will be carried on free, over-the-air television in the city of the visiting team and in the city where the game is played if it is sold out 72 hours in advance of kickoff.

The NFL is the only sports league that carries all regular-season and postseason games on free, over-the-air television.

Westwood One/Dial Global will broadcast all NFL primetime games, the three Thanksgiving Day games and the entire NFL playoffs.

Today, ESPN NFL Draft analyst Todd McShay was available for a media conference call to discuss the 2012 NFL Draft. A full audio replay can be found on ESPN MediaZone. The transcript is as follows:

Q: Sorry to take you away from the larger picture and ask you about some Northwestern guys.  I’m curious about Dan Persa, Jeremy Ebert, Al Netter.  Any of these guys moving up the board in attracting teams at this point? And I’d also include Drake Dunsmore in that.

TODD McSHAY: Well, I want to like Dan Persa more as an NFL prospect, but unfortunately he’s limited.  You look at what he offers, 5’11″ and a little bit of change, just about 210 pounds, in that range.  Such a good competitor and can create with his feet.  He’ll get a look.  I mean, he’ll get an opportunity to come and compete for a roster spot in training camp, but I don’t know that he’s going to wind up getting drafted.  He’s a good enough athlete where they could try to get him involved in special teams and do some different things, the kind of guy you want on your team, but I just don’t know that he fits in the NFL from a skills perspective. In recent years the regular season schedule has been announced on ESPN, in prime time, during a full bells and whistles circle jerk special… you know, the kind of thing that has been ruining the NFL as of late. Read the rest of this entry »

Jonathan Vilma and Drew Brees on List of Bountygate Player Suspensions

Posted by Cletus P. Stillwater, Jr. On April - 1 - 2012 ADD COMMENTS

The NFL competition committee and security officials met until almost midnight last night to discuss the player fines and suspensions for “Bountygate”. The majority of the fines seem to be of the garden-variety $25,000 to $50,000 range for most players involved.

The biggest hits to the current Saints roster are Jonathan Vilma, Roman Harper and Tracy Porter who all received 1 year suspensions and $100,000 fines. Former Saint and current Philadelphia Eagles free agent Bobby McCray is also in that top tier of suspensions. Bobby McCray who has already been fined $20,000 for illegal hits on Minnesota Vikings Quarterback Brett Favre in the 2010 NFC Championship game, a hit that has been directly tied to Bountygate.
