NCAA Reprimands Old Dominion University Head Coach

The NCAA Division I Football Championship Committee has reprimanded Old Dominion University director of athletics Camden Wood Selig and head coach Bobby Wilder for violations of the NCAA’s championship policy during the 2011 NCAA Division I Football Championship.

Specifically, Selig and Wilder did not attend a mandatory administrative meeting on Dec. 2, the night before Old Dominion’s second round game against Georgia Southern University. The committee determined the lack of attendance was grounds for championship misconduct. Read the rest of this entry »

After erroneously being declared dead last night on the internet It is now official. Penn State coach Joe Paterno has passed away. His family released this official statement

“He died as he lived,” the statement said. “He fought hard until the end, stayed positive, thought only of others and constantly reminded everyone of how blessed his life had been. His ambitions were far reaching, but he never believed he had to leave this Happy Valley to achieve them. A Lehigh University football student-athlete has been publicly reprimanded and suspended from the team’s next game for misconduct during the 2011 NCAA Division I Football Championship.

The Division I Football Championship Committee said football student-athlete Ryan Spadola was being reprimanded and held out of Lehigh’s quarterfinal contest, against North Dakota State University this Saturday (Dec. 10), for using an inappropriate and repugnant racial reference to describe Towson University student-athletes on his Twitter page in the days leading up to their FCS preliminary round match-up. Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck and record-setting wide receiver Michael Zweifel of Dubuque headline the 2011 Capital One Academic All-America Teams selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

Luck, a Heisman Trophy finalist, was honored with the Academic All-America of the Year award for Division I. Two Missouri Southern Football Players Killed in Crash

Two Missouri Southern State University football student-athletes were killed in a crash on Interstate 44 between Joplin and Springfield early Friday morning. Two other Missouri Southern State student-athletes – one a football player and the other a golfer – were seriously injured.

The two students killed in the accident were Michael McCrimmons, a freshman defensive back from Springfield, and Diondre Johnson, a redshirt freshman tight end from Springfield. Read the rest of this entry »

NCAA Suspends Devier Posey and 3 Other Ohio State Buckeyes

Ohio State University football student-athlete Devier Posey must sit five games and repay benefits after receiving approximately $720 from a booster for work not performed, according to a decision today by the NCAA student-athlete reinstatement staff. University of South Carolina football student-athlete Damiere Byrd must sit four games and repay benefits as a condition of becoming eligible to compete again, according to a decision today by the NCAA student-athlete reinstatement staff.

According to the facts submitted by the university, Byrd and his family received approximately $2,700 in recruiting inducements and impermissible benefits. These were provided by a University of South Carolina booster during Byrd’s recruitment at the institution. The impermissible benefits included lodging, transportation and meals during multiple unofficial visits to the University of South Carolina. University of Florida football student-athlete Sharrif Floyd must sit out two games and arrange repayment of approximately $2,700 to charity before he is eligible to compete, according to a decision today by the NCAA student-athlete reinstatement staff. Floyd did not compete Sept. 3 and must sit out the university’s next game on Saturday (Sept. 10).

The university declared Floyd ineligible for violations of NCAA preferential treatment rules, including receiving $2,500 cash over several months from an individual not associated with the university. Floyd used the money for living expenses, transportation and other expenses. In addition, he received impermissible benefits prior to enrollment, including transportation and lodging related to unofficial visits to several institutions. Kansas vs. Texas, a Big 12 intra-conference matchup slated for October 29, will air on Longhorn Network. The new 24/7 University of Texas network which will televise the Longhorns’ home opener against Rice University, Saturday, Sept. 3 at 7 p.m., will provide surround coverage leading into both games.

Longhorn Network will be the exclusive national distributor for the matchup with the exception of in the state of Kansas where the game will also be televised on select over-the-air stations to be determined at a later date.
