Gear Review: PreSonus AudioBox 22VSL – Welcome to the Future of Recording!

When the AudioBox 22VSL hit my desk my first thought was “This is a nice entry level recording interface”. Boy, did I grossly under estimate this box. The first thing about the AudioBox I fell in love with is the fact this unit is bus-powered. I am thrilled not to have to find a free power outlet to light this baby up. The 22VSL also comes with a phenomenal easy to install user interface.

The built in delay effects and compression are all drag and drop. This makes it incredibly easy to try different settings and fuels creative experimentation. I also love the huge graphic displays of the eq, delay and compression settings. Making the AudioBox 22VSL even easier to use is it is instantly recognized by PreSonus’ StudioOne DAW.

The AudioBox 22VSL introduces a new generation of PreSonus USB 2.0 audio/MIDI interfaces that take hardware/software integration to the logical next step. Using your computer CPU and PreSonus Virtual StudioLive™ (VSL) software, AudioBox VSL-series interfaces provide reverb and and delay effects and the same Fat Channel compression, limiting, semi-parametric EQ, and high-pass filter, as the PreSonus StudioLive™ 16.0.2digital mixer— all with inaudible latency. Now you can monitor and record with or without real-time dynamics processing and EQ!

I recorded multiple tracks with the same guitar plugged in directly to the AudioBox 22VSL. My reasoning for this was to see if the built in compression, limiting, semi-parametric EQ would give me enough processing power to get unique definition in each track. I was more than pleased with the results. My recording is full, crisp and clear. Using the onboard reverbs and delays there is absolute definition between tracks.

This compact recording powerhouse is also small enough to fit in the accessory pouch of my laptop bag. This allows me to easily record any of my rehearsal sessions or sessions at my local blues jam. All of this can be done without the use of AC power. Welcome to the future of recording!

This is a great home or pro recording interface, a huge addition to any pro musician’s laptop bag and perfect place to start for those of you just getting your feet wet in the world of recording. The AudioBox 22VSL has a MSRP of $249.00 the average street price is $199. This is a great deal seeing not only does it come bundled with PreSonus Virtual StudioLive™ (VSL) software but also a copy of Studio One Artist software with unlimited track count
