Waffle House Architect, Clifford A. Nahser, Passes Away

Unfortunate and belated as it is, you run into some pretty interesting lives in the obituaries. Case in point, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution has reported that Clifford A. Nahser passed away last week. In addition to working for the Atlanta Public School System for 26 years, designing new buildings for them, and being "an early expert in the installation of AstroTurf," Nahser was also the chief architect behind the Waffle House, the iconic, greasy spoon restaurant chain you run into every two minutes in the south of the country. Here's the story:
[INDENT]Co-founder Joe Rogers Sr. asked him to help design new restaurants from the prototype diner he opened in Avondale Estates in 1955. Mr. Nahser worked on the blueprint for one of the earlier units, then went on to help design hundreds more as the restaurant chain grew.
Tweaked and updated a little over the years, the same basic plan was used for Waffle Houses in 28 states, said his brother Donald Nahser of Alpharetta.
"He used to say, 'Anybody who's ever traveled through the South by car has been in one of my buildings,'" his brother said.

A Pearl River woman accused of groping a co-worker at the Waffle House in Mandeville where she worked is behind bars, authorities said.

Jennifer Pulsifer, 32, allegedly fondled the female coworker on several occasions last year, Mandeville Police spokesman Officer Eric Gulino said.
The first incident occurred on March 6, 2010, when Pulsifer allegedly ran her hand between the victim's legs and caressed the woman's genitals while she was bending down to pick up some change that had fallen on the floor of the restaurant, at 418 N. Causeway, Gulino said.

The victim "expressed her displeasure" at the contact but was ignored, he said. Over the next several days, Pulsifer continued to make sexual remarks aimed at the alleged victim, Gulino said. Four days after the initial incident, Pulisfer allegedly reached into the woman's bra and fondled her breast in front of a witness, he said. The woman again told Pulsifer to stop, he said.

The woman quit her job after the second incident and filed a police report in early April, Gulino said. Pulsifer, of 35352 Bookout Road, Pearl River, was booked with one count of sexual battery and one count of simple battery on Feb. 24. She was being held in the St. Tammany Parish jail in Covington on unrelated drug charges when she was booked with the crimes in Mandeville.

A Florida man tried to run over his wife by driving his truck into a Waffle House where she works as a waitress, the Panama City News Herald reports.

Police say Charles Patrick O'Bryan has been charged with attempted murder and felony mischief after he "intentionally drove his 1987 Ford pickup truck through the Waffle House building."

The vehicle struck his wife, Danielle Gibbons, who was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.

The newspaper, quoting police, says O'Bryan had called the restaurant Monday evening to speak to Gibbons but was unable to get her on the phone.

He told an employee that he was coming "to run his truck through the building and kill everyone," police say in a news release.

After crashing into the building, O'Bryan emerged from the truck wielding a knife, police say. A witness tells the New Herald that he used a broken piece of metal to subdue O'Bryan until police arrived.

SPARTANBURG, SC — Authorities say a customer at a South Carolina Waffle shop pulled a gun and shot one of two men trying to rob the restaurant.

The Greenville News reports that the shooting took place early Saturday morning inside a Waffle Shop off Interstate 85 in Spartanburg County.

Coroner Rusty Clevenger identified the dead man as 19-year-old Dante Lamont Williams of Roebuck, who was shot in the head and body.
