The Fender Telecaster has to be one of the most moded guitars in the history of the instrument. The bolt-on design and front loaded electronics make the Tele an easy target for guitar tweakers. Countless guitar stores have tons of options for hardware, plates, and knobs. With all of these choices available one of the most difficult options to change on the Telecaster are the pickups. With the clamor that this brew has created in the Chicago suburbs, I wasn’t about to leave Chicago (on a recent trip) without seeking out a bottle for myself. According to the label, “Red Eye Porter is the first of our 15 archive recipes we will brew to celebrate out 15th anniversary. Red Eye debuted in the Spring of 2009 and quickly won acclaim from the public and press alike. We brewed it a second time, which was the last time we made it, in the fall of 2009. Since then it has easily become the most requested beer for us to bring back (like almost every day). So we hope you enjoy the start of our fun 2012 project.” Read the rest of this entry »

Pope Crisco: Fresh Hop by Great Divide Brewing Co.

Posted by Pope Crisco On April - 7 - 2012 ADD COMMENTS

Spring is upon us in North Texas, and with sunny skies, cool breezes and the agreeable company of my wife, I enjoyed a day running errands, seeing The Hunger Games, and cracking open some craft beer on the patio.

Today’s selection from Denver’s Great Divide Brewing, is Hop Fresh, a pale ale sporting a mid-ranged ABV around 6.1%. It seemed like something to contrast the malt forward brews I have been drinking recently. Read the rest of this entry »

Game of Thrones is finally back. I still can barely believe that one of my favorite series of novels was adapted into a big budget HBO series, let alone one that’s received such critical success. Sure, the New York Times still doesn’t get it, but I wouldn’t call the Old Gray Lady a font of pop culture relevance.

Anyway, the first episode of the season opens with a knight falling to his death and ends with some baby murder, with plenty of other stuff squeezed in between. It went by so fast that I had to watch the episode twice. I’d be impressed if any new viewers or non-book readers could get through the hour without their head spinning. So many plot lines and characters are introduced, but I thought the episode did a good job of loosely stringing them all together by panning back and forth to the big red comet in the sky. Despite everything going on in this episode, though, it didn’t feel too rushed. I’m hoping that’s something that can carry forward in the remaining nine episodes, because there’s a lot of ground that needs to be covered if this season is going to try to stay somewhat faithful to book two. American Idol Recap: Top 8 Take on the 80′s

Posted by Neil S. Velleman On April - 5 - 2012 ADD COMMENTS

Last night on American Idol, the Top eight remaining finalists performed songs from the 80’s. Yeah, it was a time that brought us shoulder boards and polyester track suits, things we could have easily done without. But it also brought us some pretty decent music.

Some of the contestants even managed to tap into that musical gold mine and performed some of them, and some didn’t.

Working with mentor Jimmy Iovine this week, but barely contributing anything of significant note, was singer Gwen Stefani and her No Doubt bassist Tony Kanal. Also, I will mention that like last week, this week’s show was two hours long when it could have easily been 90 minutes. This week, they used the extra time to intersperse the contestants in various duets. It was far better than the God-awful group numbers (some of them were much better), but I’m still not going to discuss them any further in this column. Read the rest of this entry »

Jonathan Vilma and Drew Brees on List of Bountygate Player Suspensions

Posted by Cletus P. Stillwater, Jr. On April - 1 - 2012 ADD COMMENTS

The NFL competition committee and security officials met until almost midnight last night to discuss the player fines and suspensions for “Bountygate”. The majority of the fines seem to be of the garden-variety $25,000 to $50,000 range for most players involved.

The biggest hits to the current Saints roster are Jonathan Vilma, Roman Harper and Tracy Porter who all received 1 year suspensions and $100,000 fines. Former Saint and current Philadelphia Eagles free agent Bobby McCray is also in that top tier of suspensions. Bobby McCray who has already been fined $20,000 for illegal hits on Minnesota Vikings Quarterback Brett Favre in the 2010 NFC Championship game, a hit that has been directly tied to Bountygate. It seems lately no celebrity is safe from getting his or her cell phone hacked. One thing that is not too smart that celebrities have been doing with their smart phones in leaving sexually charged photos on them. The latest star to make this mistake is Justin Bieber’s main squeeze Selena Gomez.

The sextape does back one claim that Mariah Yeater, Justin Bieber’s alleged baby momma made during the recent paternity scandal. Mariah Yeater claimed that Justin Bieber “finished” in 30 seconds. This 1 minute 24 second sex tape shows that Justin truly is a minuteman.

We have received a press release from Summit Entertainment disclosing that the set of Twilight Breaking Dawn II has been shut down indefinitely. They currently do not know how long production will be halted. It seems that the set is being shutdown due to a rampant case of “Stupidity”. The stupidity was first spotted by 22 year old best boy grip Heywood Jablome.

During the filming of one of the film’s most dramatic scenes Heywood was heard shouting out “this is so fucking stupid.” Director Bill Condon said “after Heywood’s comment you could hear a pin drop on the set”. “That is when I realized how stupid this The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2 really is” the Director noted. Condon then added “at that moment I noticed the stupidity was quickly spreading”.

Sud Savant: Finch’s – Cut Throat a Bruiser of a Pale Ale

Posted by Joel R. Kolander On March - 31 - 2012 ADD COMMENTS

Alright gang, time to shine the spotlight on a local craft brewer that seems to be making big strides every time I hear about them. I am, of course, referring to Finch’s Beer Company located in sunny Chicago. Now I like this company already for the following reasons: 1. Umm, hello? They’re out of Chicago. 2. They involve birds in their labels and I’m sort of a bird watching nerd. 3. They have a great festival presence and were at both MWBF & SCBF in 2011. 4. They can their beers. 5. Their latest can design was in collaboration with another local business, Chicago clothier Threadless (@threadless), and is super cool. Read the rest of this entry »
