Sonoma, CA: Named after West Coast slang for the ancient children’s game “rock, paper, scissors,” the playful and irreverent Roshambo Winery continues its tradition of throwing quirky wine country events with its 6th Annual RPS Tournament. The winery’s signature event will be held on Saturday, June 7th, at their new tasting room at Cornerstone Place in Sonoma – located just 45 minutes north of San Francisco.
Last year’s tournament drew 256 competitors – from as far as Sydney and Tokyo to New York and D.C. – who all threw fists and fingers for their slice of the pie, with the winner taking home $1500.
“Though the sport has been around for centuries, RPS has finally reached a pop-cultural
tipping point,” says Roshambo president and self-proclaimed “Wine Hero,” Naomi
Brilliant. “And I’m excited that our boutique winery has played a role in its growing
popularity.” Roshambo’s RPS tournament has always been a magnet for media attention,
including a six-minute segment on the CBS Sunday Morning Show in June of 2006. But
this year promises a fresh new experience for fans of the winery and its tournament, as
the event will be held at Roshambo’s new tasting room.
Cornerstone Place is a premier wine country destination featuring an innovative and ever-changing series of conceptual art gardens and an eclectic collection of shops.Last summer Cornerstone invited a few select tasting rooms into the mix. “What we were really looking for was somebody who was going to do something unexpected and unusual here,”
says Dave Aquilina, Cornerstone’s manager. And on June 7th, when he
sees the hoards of costumed revelers playing a kid’s game for mortgage-payment kind of
cash, he’ll realize Roshambo has cornered the market on all things unexpected and
unusual. Or as the San Francisco Chronicle recently reported on a visit to Roshambo, “If
it weren’t for the flights being poured on the counter, you might not remember that this is
Wine Country.”

Roshambo Winery is the brainchild of Naomi Brilliant, a conceptual artist and
granddaughter of renowned Sonoma County grape grower Frank Johnson. It was born of
the simple idea that fine wine was too stuffy and needed to be slapped off its pedestal.
“Fighting for Fun in a Winey World” is their mantra, and with events like their annual
RPS Tournaments, Pirate Proms, art openings, and Roshambus Tours, the winery lives up
to the billing. But Roshambo knows that it’s what’s inside the bottle that really counts,
and they take great pride in producing some of California’s tastiest wines.
