TMR Music Review: Dave Mathews Band – Big Whiskey & The GrooGrux King

The GrooGrux King is a paradox. It is the return to some of classic song writing ala “Under the Table and Dreaming” or “Beyond These Crowded Streets”. The other side of the coin has some of the most angst filled emotional music ever recorded by the band.

“Time Bomb” is a heavy stand out. Dave’s screaming over an electric guitar and Hammond organ is fantastic. The deep dark lyrics of the song adds to the theme. “Squirm” is another harder departure from typical DMB. I can hear a bit of old Aerosmith in this tune, a dark interpretation if that.

There are some classic sounding tunes like the groove riddled song “Shake Me Like a Monkey” which is destined to be a live favorite for years to come. “Why I Am” is another song that lends itself to a day in the sun with DMB.

Recently interviewed on The Toucher and Rich show on WBCN in Boston Dave Mathews had this to say about the new album. “There is something on this album for everyone. If you can’t find a song you like on this CD you don’t like music.” Some would think that is a pretty bold statement. I challenge you to listen to this album and not find a song you like. I couldn’t find a song I didn’t like. This is the best DMB album ever!

Yes, I am a big fan I can say that. I could never get my head around fans of bands like The Dead or Phish who would see a band 10- 20 times live. When the artist is delivering great new music every year like DMB how can you not. So here are tour dates for you DMB fans to catch Dave and the boys on the road.

You should also sign up to see the ultimate Dave Mathews Band show. DMB will be the entertainment on this year’s Bud Light Party Cruise 2009. The band will be playing on the private island of Coco Cay. I can’t think of a better way of experiencing this album. Sitting in the sand or dancing on the beach. Go to Bud Light’s website and sign up. You won’t be sorry you did  budlightportparadise.com
