After securing their property, stockpiling valuable supplies and making sure their loved ones were safe, the residents in the path of Hurricane Sandy had some time to kill waiting for the Frankenstorm to arrive. In that period of time, some tuned in to television coverage of the storm, others monitored the event via the internet and an increased group of others spent their final hours in wait… watching porn.
Pornhub.com, a popular online adult entertainment website, told us that they experienced a significant increase in traffic during the hours leading up to the landfall of Hurricane Sandy. The boosts in traffic occurred from the evening of Sunday October 28th until the morning of Tuesday October 30th.
People in New York and New Jersey viewed more online content at Pornhub.com than any other state in the US over that period of time.
New Jersey outshined New York in their porn viewing during their “wait” time. Traffic went up 60% from 12am to 6am in New Jersey on Monday which is almost double that of New York (32%). From 10am to 3pm, there was still an increase, just not as significant, in the 10 to 20% range. Then, site visits started coming to a screeching halt in NY and NJ as Hurricane Sandy arrived and they were hit with widespread power outtages. New Jersey saw a 65% drop from Monday evening until Tuesday afternoon.
We can only speculate as to how or why this phenomenon happened. Maybe men were trying to squeeze in one last “session” of quality time before the expected loss of power. Or maybe, just maybe, internet porn is America’s REAL pastime.
We’ll check back in with pornhub.com after the next major weather event to see if there is another correlation between epic storms and watching adult videos.
