What was formerly known as the Northern Lights Brewing Company has now been renamed and re–branded No-Li Brewhouse. The force behind this new venture is NLBC founder and head brew master, Mark Irvin, and craft beer industry veteran, John Bryant, both with deep roots in Spokane.

Washington ranks 8th nationally in craft brew per capita but there are only a few small draft-only craft brewers in all of Spokane. “No-Li Brewhouse is a hometown brewer with aspirations of a regional brewery that builds an even stronger Spokane centric identity as a national craft beer destination,” said Bryant. Over the course of the last 4 days I have had a wide selection of wonderful food and drink in the company of the best friends I have known as my wife and I returned to Atlanta to celebrate her ten-year college reunion. Tonight we will have one last dinner with Sarah, friend to us and blogger of Juicy Bits, and as a pre-dinner beer, I worked my way around her fridge and pulled out a couple bottles of Terrapin Brewing Company’s seasonal “Moo-Hoo Chocolate Milk Stout,” brewed in nearby Athens, Georgia. Holy cow! You guys have easily made this my best month ever despite the fact that I was gone for a week to Washington D.C. and wrote no new posts during that time (minus a pending photo spread of Port City Brewing in Alexandria, VA). In thanks for your dedication and in apology for that pesky thing called “life” getting in the way of craft beer reviews, I’m breaking something extra special out of the cellar today! All the good vibes I’m feeling call for no less than to break out a bottle of Goose Island’s Bourbon County Brand Coffee Stout. Read the rest of this entry »

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Gives World’s Biggest Beer Producer World’s Biggest Public Relations Black Eye. Shareholders Should Demand an End to Anheuser-Busch InBev’s Sponsorship of Bloody Human Cage-Fighting, Says Alcohol Justice

The largest shareholders of publicly-traded, global beer behemoth Anheuser-Busch InBev are being asked to exert pressure on company management to end its sponsorship of the brutally violent human cage-fighting sport known as the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). In a letter sent today to the major stockholders of A-B InBev, Alcohol Justice Executive Director and CEO Bruce Lee Livingston stated, “Bud Light ads are irresponsibly delivering harmful content to millions of youth, exposing them to people beating one another to a bloody pulp…A-B InBev shareholders should be outraged.” Read the rest of this entry »

As the economy continues to improve, beverage alcohol sales are also on the rise. But not all categories are feeling relief. According to the Beverage Information Group’s Handbook Advance 2012, spirits and wine persisted in taking share away from the beer category in 2011, the only category to post a loss for the second year in a row.

Overall beer consumption fell by 1.5% last year and totaled 2.78 billion 2.25-gallon cases. However all is not bleak for the beer category. Craft and the higher-priced import segments grew as consumers traded up. But the rise in the craft and import beer could not offset the losses that occurred in the other beer segments. I love beer trades! Today’s beer I would normally never have had access to were it not for a trade catalyzed by “teh interwebz.” The new trading partner responsible for this brew, Eric (Beer. Beats. Battlestar Galactica.), assures me that this brew, Hoppin’ Frog Hop Heathen (Imperial Black Ale) came right off of the bottling line and I’m not one to sit around and let the hops fade away. So let’s pour! Read the rest of this entry »

Pope Crisco: Big Sky Brewing Co India Pale Ale

Well, its Friday here in the Republic of Intoxico, and time to put the past week behind us, for the weekend is here. My plans are simple and predictable: listen to music, drink a few bottles of beer, try to fit in a cigar, and maybe see a movie or two.

Pandora is queued up, check. A bottle of Big Sky India Pale Ale has been popped and poured, double check. Read the rest of this entry »

I recently stumbled upon this great beer, wine, and cheese shop in Windham, NH. The beer selection is very cool, the cheeses are awesome. The wine…is ever flowing. I would suggest anyone in Northern Massachusetts or Southern New Hampshire to drop in for one of these tastings. Here is the announcement from Bella Vino:  Read the rest of this entry »

Sud Savant: The Lost Abbey – 10 Commandments What a Powerhouse

The moment I saw the description on the label of this beer I was intrigued. “Ale brewed with honey, raisins, & rosemary,” it said. Whenever I see weird ingredients, whether it be in food or drink, I have to try it. Some people travel for their experiences and others hurl their bodies from heights and still others simply enjoy pushing limits in whatever they do. I, in a typical American fashion, consume my experiences.

“You put a raspberry aioli on what?!”
“I didn’t even know you could deep fry that!”
“This is from what country?”
“So the stuffing is inside the sea urchin?”

These are all phrases that indicate I am about to have a new experience. (Yes!) And lest I forget my new favorite phrase, “They made a beer using WHAT?!?” There are some very unusual ingredients out there: cucumbers from Cigar City, watermelon from 21st Amendment, passion fruit from 5 Rabbit in Chicago, hell my friend Keith even made a beer using actual Belgian waffles! There is no limit to a brewer’s creativity and I love to see the weird stuff whether it turns out amazballs or falls flat on its face. That said, these ingredients are fairly unusual, but rosemary is one of my absolute favorite herbs so I’m excited to see how this beer tastes. Let’s pour! Read the rest of this entry »

Pope Crisco: Bucking Bock by Rahr and Sons

Hello fellow craft beer drinkers, I hope life has been treating you well this early Spring.

With Spring, Texans have the coming of blue bonnets, the state flower, Texas Rangers and Houston Astros baseball to cover for the lack of post season hockey from the Dallas Stars, and thanks to the continuing tradition from the German settlers that populated the Republic of Texas in this nations infancy, seasonal bock beer offerings are hitting the store shelves. Already on Intoxico I have reviewed the Saint Arnold Brewery’s offering, and today I have the offering from Fort Worth’s own Rahr and Sons in their Bucking Bock. Read the rest of this entry »
