Suds With Securb: Bud Light Platinum Hands on Review

Posted by Bruce Owens On February - 12 - 2012 ADD COMMENTS

Last weekend when I landed in Vegas for Super Bowl Sunday I noticed Bud Light Platinum had found great point of sale positioning not only in the airport but also all over Las Vegas. I was excited to try this beer, when Anheuser-Busch hits a homerun as they occasionally do I am the first to give them kudos. This was not the case.

The good news for you Bud Light/Budweiser drinkers is Bud Light Platinum tastes just like your typical Anheuser-Busch beer. The bad news is Bud Light Platinum tastes just like your typical Anheuser-Busch beer. It is so easy for a beer blogger to simply slam an Anheuser-Busch product and move on. Most beer snobs and geeks will applaud this move. I wanted to give Bud Light Platinum a fighting chance so I looked around the internet to find any positive words about this new product. This is what I found: Read the rest of this entry »

This could not be a better week for these two beers to come across my desk. New Belgium Brewing’s Lips of Faith are the perfect beers for Valentine’s Day. Typically, I would not suggest buying your beloved beers on this holiday. In this case, you are safe coming home beer in tow.

The first of this release Biere de Mars is a Bière de Garde. The ale pours a cloudy orange color with a fluffy white head. Biere de Mars has a citrus driven aroma, a perfect fireplace sipper with wonderful citrus and spicy aromas. The dryness of the beer and the funk of the wild yeast give this beer an almost vinous quality to it. You will definitely pick up caramel and cinnamon esters in the nose of this beer. Cinnamon has been shown to increase sex drive it is a natural aphrodisiac.  How can you go wrong with this beer?  Read the rest of this entry »

Suds With Securb: Time For Bud Light to Man Up

Posted by Bruce Owens On January - 2 - 2012 ADD COMMENTS

3rd party testing lab Consumer Reports recently did a blinded controlled testing of ten popular lagers. The only standout of the ten was Coors which scored “very good” for taste and value. Coors also delivered a solid whooping to InBev rivals Budweiser and Bud Light in both taste and value categories.

The big surprise here is Budweiser and Bud Light from Anheuser-Busch InBev NV (BUD) (NYSE)‎ didn’t even place in the value category. Adding insult to injury is AB was beaten out by Trader Joe’s store brand Tag contract brewed by Minhas Craft Brewery and Walgreen’s store brand Big Flats brewed by Genesee Brewing Company. Walgreens? Jim Beam Bold Choices: Let’s All Blaze a Trail in 2012

Posted by Bruce Owens On December - 16 - 2011 ADD COMMENTS

Those of you that follow this site know that we have been working with Jim Beam for the past few months. I want to personally thank Jim Beam for including us in their Bold Choices promotion. I have found myself making more Bold Choices lately and these choices are bringing me to some wonderful places.

The original Bold Choice Jim Beam helped me make was in regards to my guitar playing. I have been a Boston bread hard rocking guitar player all my life. Since visiting Nashville last year I have been in awe of my southern guitar playing counterparts. I have been truly inspired but their playing. Read the rest of this entry »

I have been going a bit nutty with the Jim Beam Devil’s Cut posts these days but I absolutely love this bourbon. Devil’s Cut uses a process that extracts the very last drops of bourbon out of the oak barrels. This produces a rich oaky bourbon with wonderful vanilla undertones. It is those undertones that got me thinking.

I have a blackberry bourbon reduction I have been making for years. I was wondering what would happen if I upgraded the bourbon to Jim Beam Devil’s Cut? I was pleasantly surprised. This was the best this sauce has ever come out, here is the recipe. Read the rest of this entry »

Suds With Securb: Get Ready for the Beerpocalypse

Posted by Bruce Owens On September - 17 - 2011 ADD COMMENTS

You can’t have you cake and eat it to the same goes for cellaring your beers. Today is one of those days that I am heading downstairs with a flashlight. I will without a doubt discover beers I forgot I even bought. I might even find a beer or two from a now defunct brewery.
I am not going to pop the caps on all of these beers and sit on my sofa watching college ball all day. If theses beers are to be deflowered I am doing it right.

I have my friends from Night Shift Brewing in Boston stopping by. Joining them is one of my friends from Harpoon Brewing. I think we have a nice cast of characters taking tasting notes today. My hopes are to get the tasting notes on some of these vintages posted to the site for you over the next few weeks. Here is today’s starting beer line-up and food. Read the rest of this entry »

It seems like brewery startups are popping up all over Boston. There is without a doubt an explosion in nano-breweries and contract brewing going on. This week TMR got an exclusive with Backlash Beer Company. Backlash is headquartered in Boston’s student friendly Brighton area. Brighton is also home to some of Boston’s best beer bars.

As I told Founder Helder Pimentel and Brand Manager Maggie Foley the name and logo of Backlash is very Boston. The stenciled brass-knuckles looks like a throwback to Boston’s hardcore era. As do the names of their beers. Groundswell, Backlash’s inaugural beer is a Belgian Style Blond Ale that will hit Boston taverns this week. The beer is at the distributor and ready to ship on Wednesday. Read the rest of this entry »

The fast food industry is finally catching up with their counter parts overseas. Burger King and Sonic restaurants are now serving beer. Burger King “Whopper Bars” recently opened in Miami, Las Vegas and Kansas City. The Burger King locations pump out drafts of the usual American adjunct lagers. Read the rest of this entry »

Suds With Securb: What Evil Empire?

I stopped in a modest liquor store on the way home last night. This is by no means a beer store, but it is in a high end neighborhood and usally has a few nice offerings. To my surprise I found Goose Island IPA on this store’s racks last night.

I am a huge fan of Goose Island but unfortunately is is a difficult brand to find in Boston. I know of a few places that serve Goose Islands Belgian Style Pale Ale – Matilda. The rest of the Goose Island portfolio eludes us in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Read the rest of this entry »

Happy Fuchen Father’s Day

Posted by Bruce Owens On June - 11 - 2011 ADD COMMENTS

With Father’s Day around the corner you are probably scratching your head trying to think of the perfect gift for Dad. Well we found something that will definitely make Dad Fῡchen happy. Hitting the shelves of package stores across America is a new herbal liquor called Fῡchen. Fῡchen is a change up from your typical chilled herbal shots and is a lot easier to say.

Scotch and Bourbon are always the classic Father’s Day Bottles, why not go for something Fῡchen new. So this Father’s Day drop by your Dad’s, turn on the Fῡchen game and have yourself a great Fῡchen Father’s Day. Read the rest of this entry »

With Fathers Day around the corner I thought I would take a look at some of the gifts that your Dads would prefer to open instead of another tie.

Nothing says I love you Dad better than a nice bottle of bourbon. There are many classic brands out there and new micro-batch options when buying bourbon. My thoughts why not get him something new.

Jim Beam has release a great new bourbon – Devil’s Cut. Devil’s Cut uses a new process that extracts the very last of the bourbon out of the wood of the barrel. This creates an oaky, vanilla flavor that I found wonderful both neat and with cola. The Devil’s Cut and cola had a Vanilla Coke kind of vibe going on. Read the rest of this entry »

In what could be breaking a cardinal man rule and beer writer law I am reviewing a malt beverage. We have done pieces on some of the Four -Locoesque malt bombs in the past. Most of those reviews were tongue-in-cheek satire. Today we are going to take a look at Jeremiah Weed Road House Tea.

Jeremiah Weed Road House Tea is not a “chick drink” it is a 5.8% abv can of goodness. Jeremiah Weed Road House Tea pours a clear bourbon color with no head. It has a strong citrus/alcohol aroma with a classic Lipton tea aroma. The mouth feel is light with no carbonation. There is a strong sweetness that carries to the finish and is joined on the backend with a ton of lemon and alcohol. Read the rest of this entry »

Harpoon Brewing in Boston churns out more new product than any brewer I can think of. This is in part fueled by their highly successful 100 Barrel Series, UFO and Leviathan product lines. Leviathan is the vehicle for Harpoon’s big beers – Baltic Porters, IIPAs and other gems. The latest release for the Leviathan is a Barleywine.

Harpoon has twice in my memory release this style of highly sought after ale. Once as a one off release of the 100 Barrel Series and years later the same recipe was release as a 100 Barrel Encore. Harpoon is quick to point out this is not the same recipe. Read the rest of this entry »

New England Brewing Supply Launches Homebrewing Website

Posted by Bruce Owens On February - 2 - 2011 ADD COMMENTS

I recently got the chance to talk with Jeremiah O’Neill founder of New England Brewing Supply. Jeremiah has created a web destination where homebrewers of all skill levels can buy quality ingredients at bargain prices. I was pleasantly surprised not only by the variety of hops and grains available but also the availibiliy Brettanomyces and other funky yeast strains.

Here is an excerpt from the email Jeremiah sent me announcing the launch of this great website. Read the rest of this entry »
